Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceXAI, the AI business of SpaceX, will be renamed SpaceXSI. He made the statement in a reply on X on October 4, after a user asked whether the company would adopt the new name. “Yes, we will make that change,” he wrote, according to a Reuters report carried by The Star. The rename follows a shift in federal terminology that the White House has been pushing since late September.
What Musk actually said.
Musk's first post on the subject went further than the reply. According to OfficeChai, he suggested dropping the “AI” label altogether in favour of “SI,” and he described the change as better. His reply to the user was shorter and confirmed the plan. Neither post gave a timeline or explained how the change would be carried out. As of the Reuters report, the SpaceXAI account on X still carried its old name, and the company had not responded to a request for comment.
Why the name is changing now.
The timing points to Washington more than to product plans. On September 29, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to replace “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” and “AI” with “SI” in official communications, websites and reports, OfficeChai reports. Trump had made the case at the United Nations General Assembly the week before, arguing that the word artificial makes the technology sound fake. The White House also asked its science and technology adviser to propose a federal legal definition of Super Intelligence within 60 days.
The order binds federal agencies only. It does not require companies such as SpaceX to change their names or terms, and SpaceX listed its shares in June in what OfficeChai calls the largest IPO ever. OfficeChai also cites a YouGov poll, reported by Axios, in which 53 percent of respondents preferred the phrase artificial intelligence and 9 percent preferred super intelligence. Public preference and official wording are pointing in different directions.
The background to the name.
SpaceX acquired xAI in February and renamed the unit SpaceXAI in July, according to OfficeChai. The unit is best known for the Grok family of models. Musk's reply does not say whether the renamed unit will change its product names, model identifiers, API endpoints or legal entity. Those details matter to developers and enterprise customers, because a name change can ripple through contracts, invoices and documentation long after the announcement.
What is still unknown.
No effective date has been published, and no product changes have been announced. Let's Data Science, which also covered the reply, said Musk gave no implementation plan. The coverage does not say whether the rename will reach the company's external branding or only its internal documents. Customers who depend on the company's models should watch for updated documentation rather than assume the names will stay the same.
