How is the date of Matariki set?
The Matariki public holiday is the Friday closest to the Tangaroa lunar period, set by the government.
Matariki is the Māori New Year, marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster (the Pleiades) in midwinter. It became a New Zealand public holiday in 2022, the first to recognise te ao Māori.
Because it follows the lunar calendar, the holiday moves between late June and mid July, and it is always on a Friday.
